Founded in Karachi in 1957, the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) soon made its mark. By 1964, the Government of Pakistan granted it autonomy as a dedicated research institution. Since then, it has focused on both theoretical and practical aspects of Development Economics. PIDE primarily addresses Pakistan’s economic challenges. At the same time, it provides a strong foundation for policy decisions. Furthermore, it offers international scholars a clear view of Pakistan’s research landscape.

Over time, PIDE expanded its scope beyond economics. Now, it includes vital disciplines such as demography, anthropology, and interdisciplinary studies. These additions strengthen its role in shaping effective economic policies. With over six decades of excellence, PIDE enjoys global recognition. Esteemed economists, including Nobel Laureate Robert A. Mundell, serve on its advisory board. Additionally, its experienced faculty actively contributes to global academic discourse.

PIDE is located at the Quaid-i-Azam University campus in Islamabad, Pakistan capital. The campus lies beneath the scenic Margalla Hills on the Potohar Plateau. Nearby, the ancient city of Taxila holds remnants of the world’s oldest university.

This region, rich in history, has been a cradle of civilization for over 5,000 years. Surrounded by other academic institutions, PIDE sits at the heart of research activity. It thrives as a center for social and economic studies in South Asia.
