Let us be honest. Most public universities in Pakistan feel stuck in the past. Same old lectures. Same old labs. Same old degree that leaves you scrambling for experience after graduation.
Then there is PAF-IAST. The Pak-Austria Fachhochschule sits in Mang, Haripur — about an hour from Islamabad — and it feels different from day one. It is Pakistan’s first foreign engineering university, built with Austrian and Chinese partners. It has a lake on campus. A technology park next door. And a teaching model that forces you to actually build things, not just memorize formulas.
But is it worth moving to Haripur for? What does it cost? Will employers respect your degree? And what on earth is a Fachhochschule anyway?
I have pulled together every fee slip, entry test paper, and alumni story to give you the real picture. No fluff. Just answers.
What Is PAF-IAST, Really?
PAF-IAST is a public-sector university on Khanpur Road, Mang, Haripur. It was born from a grand idea back in 2005 when Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, then Chairman of HEC, envisioned seven world-class technology universities for Pakistan with help from China and Europe. The project stalled, but the Austrian connection survived.
Three Austrian universities and five Chinese universities are official partners. The foundation stone was laid in 2016, and the campus opened in 2020. It follows the Fachhochschule model — basically, a University of Applied Sciences where industry projects and practical labs are as important as theory.

Important: Pre-medical students can apply for IT, computing, and even some engineering programs through Test 1. Pre-engineering students can apply for almost everything through Test 2. ICS students have their own test. Do not sit the wrong one.
Step 4: Prepare Smart
- Engineering applicants: Revise FSc Math, Physics, and Chemistry. Focus on MCQs from entry test prep books.
- Computing applicants: If you are from ICS, brush up on basic programming logic and general math.
- Design applicants: Practice sketching. The drawing section is 50% of your test. Bring your own pencils and colors.
- Business applicants: Basic arithmetic and English comprehension. Nothing scary.
Step 5: Interview (For Design & Architecture Only)
If you applied for B.Arch or any design program, you will face an interview after the test. Show your creative work. Talk about why you want to design.
Step 6: Merit List & Fee Deposit
Merit lists are posted online. If you make it, pay your fees by the deadline. Seats are limited and competitive.
Scholarships & Financial Support
PAF-IAST offers several ways to lighten the load.
Internal Merit Scholarships
- 100% Tuition Waiver: GPA 3.80 – 4.00
- 50% Tuition Waiver: GPA 3.50 – 3.79
These are semester-based. Keep your grades up, and you keep the discount.
Need-Based Scholarships
Partial to full tuition coverage based on verified household income and an interview. You will need to submit income certificates and explain your financial situation.
External Grants
- KP Workers Welfare Board (WWB) Scholarships
- HEC Ehsaas / National Endowment Grants
- KP Education Foundation Financial Support
Tip: Apply for external scholarships early. They often have deadlines before the university semester starts.
Campus Life: What Is It Actually Like?
PAF-IAST is young. The first batch graduated recently. So it does not have the old-boys-club feel of NUST or GIKI. But that also means everything is new.
Facilities
- Labs: Modern, industry-standard equipment (the Austrian influence shows here)
- Library: Standard library with group discussion cubicles
- Wi-Fi: Campus-wide coverage
- Sports: Jogging tracks, football and cricket grounds, badminton and volleyball courts
- Hostels: Furnished, with dining halls and common rooms
- Transport: Available for day scholars
The Vibe
The campus is green, quiet, and surrounded by hills. The lake in the middle is real — not a decorative pond. Students say it is peaceful but isolated. There are no malls nearby. No cinema. The nearest proper market is in Haripur city or Hattar.
Weekend plans? Most students head to Islamabad, Abbottabad, or just chill on campus. There are student societies and events, but do not expect a LUMS-level social calendar.
Food
The hostel dining hall serves standard mess food. It is edible, not gourmet. Nearby dhabas on Khanpur Road exist for when you need a change.
The Technology Park & Industry Linkages: Why This Matters
Here is where PAF-IAST truly stands out. It is not just a university. It is an ecosystem.
Fachhochschule Innovation Technology Park (FITP)
Located right on campus, the technology park is positioned 20 minutes from Hattar Industrial Estate — one of KP’s biggest industrial zones. It offers:
- State-of-the-art laboratories
- Prototyping facilities
- Co-working spaces for startups
- Industry-academia collaboration programs
Business Incubation Center
The incubation center has already nurtured 18 startups, providing mentorship and boot camps. If you have a tech idea, you can literally build it here and get support.
Faculty Research Grants
Every faculty member trained in Austria or China gets an average grant of USD 50,000 for developing new projects in the innovation park. A sum of 10 million USD has already been set aside for this.
What this means for you: Your teachers are not just lecturing. They are building real products, filing patents, and working with Austrian and Chinese scientists. You can join their research teams as a student.
Double Degree Potential
PAF-IAST is working toward equivalence with Austrian and Chinese partner universities. The goal is that if you meet their academic standards, your degree could hold the same weight as one from a European or Chinese technical university.
