Mohi-ud-Din Islamic University (MIU) — a place where students study computer science while clouds drift past their classroom windows.
But MIU is not just one campus. Two hundred kilometers away, in the flat industrial zone of Mirpur, sits Mohi-ud-Din Islamic Medical College (MIMC) — the first medical college ever established in Azad Jammu & Kashmir, running since 2009 with 100 MBBS seats approved by the national medical regulator.
Same university. Two completely different worlds. One campus feels like a retreat center. The other feels like a hospital complex. And the fees, the entry requirements, and the daily experience differ just as sharply.
What You Can Study at MIU
The university splits its academic load between the mountain campus and the medical campus.
At Nerian Sharif (Main Campus):
- BS Computer Science — 4 years
- BS Information Technology — 4 years
- ADP Computer Science / IT — 2 years
- BS Islamic Studies — 4 years
- BS Arabic — 4 years
- BS Education — 4 years
- BS English — 4 years
- BS 5th Semester Lateral Entry — 2 years (for students with ADP or equivalent)
- MS / MPhil in Computer Science, Islamic Studies, Education — 2 years
- PhD in selected disciplines — 3 to 7 years
At MIMC Mirpur (Medical Campus):
- MBBS — 5 years
- BS Allied Health Sciences — 4 years
- BS Nursing — 4 years
The MBBS program is the flagship. Everything else exists to support the broader academic mission. If you are coming to mohi ud din university for computing or Islamic studies, you will spend your time in Nerian Sharif. If you are coming for medicine, you will live in Mirpur.
The Real Cost: What You Actually Pay
This is where the two campuses diverge dramatically.
MBBS at MIMC Mirpur
The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council caps MBBS fees for private medical colleges. For the current session, that cap sits at PKR 1,890,000 per year for MIMC Mirpur.
Over five years, you are looking at roughly PKR 9.45 million in tuition alone. Add hostel with messing at PKR 375,000 per year, and your total five-year cost crosses PKR 11 million.
That is serious money. Comparable to private medical colleges in Punjab and Sindh. The only consolation is that PMDC fixes the fee, so the university cannot randomly hike it beyond the notified cap.
Non-Medical Programs at Nerian Sharif
The mountain campus programs are far cheaper. Based on available data:
| Program | Estimated Per Semester | First Semester (with one-time charges) |
| BS Computer Science / BSIT | PKR 45,000 – 60,000 | ~PKR 65,000 – 80,000 |
| ADP CS / IT | PKR 35,000 – 45,000 | ~PKR 55,000 – 65,000 |
| BS English / Education / Islamic Studies | PKR 30,000 – 40,000 | ~PKR 50,000 – 60,000 |
| MS / MPhil | PKR 55,000 – 70,000 | ~PKR 75,000 – 90,000 |
One-time charges include an application fee of PKR 2,000, admission fee of PKR 15,000 – 20,000, and a refundable security deposit of PKR 5,000.
Important: These non-medical fees are approximate. The Nerian Sharif campus does not publish a detailed public fee schedule online. Call the admission office at 0342-9698270 or email admissions@miu.edu.pk to get the exact current semester challan before you budget.
Getting In: Admission Process
For MBBS at MIMC Mirpur
You need 60% in FSc Pre-Medical and a valid MDCAT score. The merit formula weighs your FSc marks and MDCAT performance. MIMC admits 100 students annually. Competition is stiff because AJK has limited medical college options.
Apply through the MIMC portal or visit the Mirpur campus directly. The campus spans 3.5 million square feet in Sector D-4, New Industrial Area — it is hard to miss.
For Non-Medical Programs at Nerian Sharif
- BSCS / BSIT: 50% in FSc Pre-Engineering, ICS, or General Science with Mathematics. Pre-Medical students can apply but must clear deficiency math courses in year one.
- BS Humanities: 45% in FA / FSc / Intermediate.
- MS / MPhil: 16 years of relevant education with minimum 2.5 CGPA or 2nd Division, plus an entry test.
The application process is online through miu.edu.pk or via hard-copy forms from either campus. You submit your Matric and Intermediate mark sheets, domicile (AJK or Pakistan), CNIC or B-Form, and passport photos. For MBBS, your MDCAT score card is mandatory.
Scholarships and Fee Relief
MIU offers several concession options, though the medical and non-medical campuses handle them differently.
- AJK Domicile Merit Waivers: Partial fee cuts for high-achieving students from AJK districts. This matters because most students at MIU are from Azad Kashmir.
- Need-Based Aid: The Student Financial Aid Committee reviews applications from low-income families. You submit income proof and go through verification.
- Hafiz-e-Quran Concession: Fee reduction after oral verification by the university committee.
- Sibling Discount: 20% off tuition if your brother or sister is already enrolled.
For MBBS students, the fee cap is fixed by PMDC, so internal scholarships are limited. For Nerian Sharif campus students, the need-based and merit waivers can cover a meaningful chunk of the already low fees.
Campus Life: Two Completely Different Experiences
Nerian Sharif feels like a boarding school in the mountains. The campus sits at high altitude with cool weather year-round. Academic blocks, a library, computer labs, and student dormitories are all on-site. Hostel accommodation is available for both male and female students. There is not much to do outside campus — the nearest town is Trarkhel, and the road to Rawalakot takes time. You come here to study, pray, and breathe clean air.
MIMC Mirpur is the opposite. Flat terrain, hot summers, and a sprawling 3.5 million square foot campus that functions like a self-contained city. It has separate boys’ and girls’ hostels housing over 600 students, tri-seated furnished rooms, dining halls, cafeterias, and transport services. The teaching hospital is attached to the campus, so clinical rotations happen without leaving the premises.
The catch: MIMC is a fully residential institution. You are expected to live on campus. That adds PKR 375,000 per year to your budget.
Jobs After Graduation
MBBS graduates from MIMC work at district hospitals in AJK, move to Punjab or Sindh for house jobs, or prepare for FCPS and foreign licensing exams. Starting house job stipends range from PKR 60,000 to 80,000 depending on the hospital.
BSCS and BSIT graduates from Nerian Sharif typically find work at local software houses, government IT departments, or move to Islamabad and Lahore for better opportunities. Starting salaries range from PKR 35,000 to 55,000. The AJK tech sector is small, so mobility matters.
BS Education and Islamic Studies graduates usually teach at schools, madrasas, or colleges in AJK and surrounding regions. Starting salaries are modest — PKR 25,000 to 40,000 — but the degree cost was low.
The honest truth: MIMC’s MBBS degree carries weight because it is PMDC-recognized and the only medical college in AJK. The Nerian Sharif degrees are HEC-recognized but the brand is regional. If you want a job outside Azad Kashmir, you will need to network and build skills independently.

Should You Apply?
If you are from Azad Kashmir and want to study medicine without leaving the region, MIMC is your best shot. It is the only PMDC-approved medical college in AJK. The fee is high but capped by the regulator. The campus is purpose-built and fully residential.
If you want a low-cost computing or humanities degree in a mountain setting, the Nerian Sharif campus offers genuine value. The fees are among the lowest for private university programs in Pakistan. But you sacrifice city life, internship access, and brand recognition outside AJK.
Apply early. Verify the exact fee directly with the admission office before you budget. And visit the campus if you can — photos do not capture what 6,000 feet feels like.
