What Is LUMS, Really
Lahore University of Management Sciences sits on 100 acres in Sector U, DHA Phase 5, Lahore. Private, non-profit, set up in 1985, chartered by the Punjab government and fully recognized by HEC. It’s co-ed, full stop, boys and girls study together in every school, no separate campuses or timings.

Degrees LUMS Offers
SDSB (Business): BSc Hons in Accounting & Finance or Management Science — 4 years. MBA and Executive MBA — 2 years. MS in Business & Public Policy, Healthcare Management, Financial Management, Supply Chain — 1.5 to 2 years.
MGSHSS (Humanities & Social Sciences): BSc Hons in Economics, Economics & Maths, Politics & Economics, Political Science, Anthropology & Sociology. BA Hons in English and History. All 4 years. MS/MPhil in Economics and Public Policy — 2 years.
SBASSE (Science & Engineering): BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Maths, Biology. All 4 years, plus MS and PhD tracks. Quick note: LUMS calls these BS degrees, not “BE,” so don’t get confused comparing them to engineering-university naming.
SAHSOL (Law): BA-LLB Hons — 5 years, combines humanities grounding with actual legal training.
SOE (Education): MPhil in Education Leadership and Management — 2 years, for people already in or aiming for education policy and admin roles.
Fee Structure — The Real Numbers
LUMS charges per credit hour now, not a flat semester rate. Rate is around PKR 45,800 per credit hour for undergrad (this changes yearly).

One-time charges on top: admission fee around PKR 176,600 (non-refundable), security deposit around PKR 67,000 (refundable when you leave, minus any dues). Science and engineering students pay extra lab charges baked into their per-semester bill.
Can’t pay lump sum? Talk to the Financial Aid Office. Students facing genuine hardship can request installment splits on the semester invoice, or apply for interest-free university loans that get settled after graduation. It’s not automatic — you have to ask.
How to Apply — Step by Step
Admissions open once a year for Fall, applications usually go live in October or November, and close around late January. LCAT (the internal test) happens mid-February. Dates shift slightly every cycle, so bookmark the official admissions calendar and check it, don’t rely on last year’s dates.
- Register on the LUMS admissions portal and pick your school/program preference.
- Fill in academics, extracurriculars, and the essay section — don’t rush this, it matters more than people think.
- Pay the application fee (roughly PKR 11,500, plus PKR 6,500 extra if you’re sitting the LCAT).
- Upload transcripts, IBCC equivalence (for O/A Level students), CNIC/B-form, photos.
- Take your test — SAT, ACT, or LCAT. SBASSE applicants also sit a separate Scientific Aptitude Test, usually same day as LCAT.
Eligibility, roughly: Matric/FSc stream needs 70% in Matric and 65% in FSc/ICS/ICom minimum. O/A Level stream needs 8 O-Level subjects averaging a B, plus 3 A-Level subjects averaging 2 Bs and a C. These are floors, not guarantees — actual admitted students usually sit well above these numbers.
Entry test: LCAT is a paper-based test, seven sections mixing verbal and math, around 3 hours total. SAT works too if you’d rather — LUMS looks at whichever score is stronger if you submit both. There’s no published cutoff, but competitive SAT scores tend to sit in the 1300–1480+ range.
Scholarships — Don’t Skip This Section
LUMS runs a need-blind policy for local students on paper, meaning your finances shouldn’t block you from applying.
- National Outreach Programme (NOP): Fully funded — tuition, hostel, books, monthly stipend, the works. Aimed at high-achieving students from under-resourced schools. You apply during Intermediate Part 1 or AS-Level year for the NOP summer coaching session; clear that, then you sit LUMS’s regular admission process.
- Merit scholarships: Automatic waivers from 10% to 50% of tuition based on your admission ranking, no separate application.
- Need-based aid: Partial or full tuition support after a detailed family income review. You submit financial documents alongside your application.
- Interest-free loans: For the gap financial aid doesn’t cover, repayable after you graduate and start earning.
Campus Life, Honestly
Hostels exist for both genders, double or triple rooms, Wi-Fi, laundry, 24/7 security. Food-wise you’ve got the EDC, PDC, and a mix of fast-food outlets and cafes on campus — decent variety, not cheap if you’re eating out daily. Weekend shuttles run into central Lahore.
SBASSE labs are genuinely solid — cleanrooms, robotics setups, HPC clusters tied into real research work. If you’re doing CS or engineering, the equipment isn’t just for show.
Pros: serious alumni network, strong faculty, real recruitment pipeline, active societies. Cons: expensive without aid, brutal grading curve, and yes, the competition among peers is intense — it wears some students down.
Jobs After Graduating
Business and humanities grads land at consultancies, FMCGs, banks, and tech companies — starting salaries roughly PKR 100,000 to 220,000 a month. CS and engineering grads go into software houses, telecoms, or foreign PhD programs — starting around PKR 130,000 to 300,000 a month. These numbers move with the market, so treat them as a rough range, not gospel.
