Khyber Medical University (KMU) is a public sector medical university in Phase 5, Hayatabad, Peshawar. It was established in 2007 and is fully recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PM&DC). The university is co-educational.
KMU acts as the main examining and admitting body for medical, dental, nursing and allied health institutions across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It has multiple constituent institutes in Peshawar, Kohat, Mardan, Swat, Mansehra, Dir, Kurram and other places, plus more than 200 affiliated colleges.

- MD / MS / MDS in clinical specialties – 4–5 years

- Master in Health Profession Education, Public Health and various diplomas / certificates (1–2 years)
Durations follow standard medical and health sciences rules. Clinical training takes place in attached teaching hospitals.
Fee Structure
Fees differ by program and seat category (open merit, self-finance, foreign).
For public-sector MBBS / BDS open-merit seats (KP medical colleges under KMU):
- First year: roughly Rs 87,000–102,000
- Later years: Rs 83,000–135,000 depending on the year and college
Full five-year MBBS open-merit cost stays around Rs 4.7–5.7 lakh. Self-finance seats cost over Rs 1 million per year. Foreign seats are in US dollars (around 7,000–7,500 per year).
For KMU’s own institutes (DPT, BS Nursing, BS Allied Health, MPhil, PhD):

Admissions Information & How to Apply
MBBS & BDS
KMU is the admitting university for all public and private medical/dental colleges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Eligibility:
- FSc Pre-Medical or equivalent with minimum 60% marks
- Valid MDCAT score (passing threshold as announced)
- Relevant domicile
Merit formula: usually 10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% MDCAT/ETEA.
Process:
- Appear in MDCAT.
- Apply online on the KMU central admissions portal when notified.
- Upload documents and pay processing fee.
- Check merit lists and report to the allotted college if selected.
BS / DPT / Nursing Programs
Apply through KMU’s BS Undergraduate Centralized Admission Portal. Eligibility is FSc Pre-Medical (or equivalent) with 50–60% marks depending on the program. KMU-CAT is required for most seats. Candidates from other provinces can also apply but must sit the KMU test.
Postgraduate
Require MBBS/BDS or relevant degree, house job (for clinical), PMDC registration and entry test (GAT or university test). Notices appear on the website.
Documents needed: academic certificates, domicile, CNIC, photographs, character certificate, medical fitness and equivalence if applicable. Admission calendar follows MDCAT and provincial notifications – usually open after results are announced.

Main campus is in Phase 5, Hayatabad, Peshawar – a planned and relatively peaceful area. Other institutes are spread across the province. Transport is available on limited seats.
Hostel facilities at the main campus are limited; many students arrange private accommodation or use hostels of affiliated colleges. Separate arrangements exist for boys and girls where available. Mess and basic amenities are provided. Security is maintained.
Labs, libraries, research centres and clinical training facilities are available at constituent institutes. Class timings follow the semester or annual system depending on the program. The environment is professional and focused on clinical and research work.
