Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University

In the early 1970s, Sindh had only two medical colleges one in Karachi and another in Jamshoro. At that time, Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, then Prime Minister and a native of Larkana, envisioned a medical institution in his hometown. Consequently, he announced the establishment of Chandka Medical College in Larkana. The college officially began its operations on April 20, 1973.

Years later, on March 29, 1989, during the first tenure of the People’s Government, a formal request was made to upgrade Chandka Medical College. Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto approved the plan to transform it into a university. This step laid the foundation for what would become Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU).
