Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University, Peshawar, is the first public women’s university in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Established to honor women who fought for emancipation, it celebrates their contributions to national development. The university bears the name of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto in recognition of her enduring legacy.
On September 1, 2004, Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani inaugurated the university’s main campus. Later, on June 10, 2005, Prof. Dr. Syeda Farhana Jahangir was appointed as the founding Vice Chancellor.
Initially, the university operated from the Psychology Department at the University of Peshawar. By November 2005, the required funds became available for further development. Soon after, the university moved into the hostel building of Government Frontier College for Women, Peshawar.
In February 2006, academic activities officially began. Eight departments launched, including Arabic, English, Psychology, and Computer Science, among others. The first intake enrolled 240 students, marking the start of a new educational chapter for women.
