Initially founded as Jamia Abbasia in 1925 by Nawab Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi-V,
this institution served as a religious seminary. Later in 1963, authorities renamed it Jamia Islamia to reflect broader academic goals. Then in 1975, the Punjab Assembly granted it university status under the IUB Act. Consequently, it became The Islamia University IUB of Bahawalpur, a recognized public sector university.
At present, the university operates seven campuses. Three campuses Abbasia, Baghdad-ul-Jadeed, and Khawaja Fareed function within Bahawalpur. Additionally, sub-campuses serve students in Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, Liaquatpur, and Ahmedpur East. To address modern academic demands, the university expanded its departments. Now, it offers over 300 disciplines in diverse academic fields.
