The Sindh government established Quaid-e-Azam University Engineering College Quest Larkana in 1963 to expand engineering education in the interior regions of Sindh. Initially, it functioned as a constituent college of the University of Sindh. Following the 1972 education policy, the government decided to upgrade the college to a university-level institution and relocate it to Nawabshah. As a result, first-year classes began at the new location in February 1974.
By July 1976, the institution had entered its second phase. The government amended the Sindh University Act of 1972 and declared it an additional campus of the University of Sindh, appointing a Pro Vice-Chancellor to lead it. Eventually, on March 1, 1977, an ordinance officially upgraded the campus to a full-fledged university. Later, the Sindh Provincial Assembly passed an Act, renaming it Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Nawabshah.
