University of Karachi

The University of Karachi spans over 1,200 acres of land. Parliament established it as a Federal University in 1951. Later in 1962, a new act reclassified it as a provincial university for Sindh. Earlier, on 23rd October 1950, the Karachi University Act had been passed. After an amendment in 1951, it came into effect. Soon after, Prof. A. B. A. Haleem became its first Vice Chancellor.

Initially, for two years, the university only conducted exams for affiliated colleges. Then, in 1953, it began teaching and research activities. It started with two faculties: Arts and Science. With just 50 students in the beginning, the university has grown remarkably. Today, it houses 53 departments and 20 advanced research centers. These function under eight faculties, including Arts, Science, Pharmacy, Law, and others.

As of 30th June 2018, over 41,000 students were enrolled on campus. The university employs more than 700 teachers. Additionally, over 2,100 staff members support its daily operations.

At first, the university operated in small buildings near Civil Hospital. However, growing academic needs created pressure on space. Moreover, the location’s congestion and pollution hindered academic focus. As a result, authorities secured 1,279 acres on Country Club Road (now University Road). On 18th January 1960, the university relocated to this new campus.
