Although Gujrat is a modern town, it stands on the site of an ancient settlement. Raja Bachan Pal, a Surajbansi Rajput from the lower Gangetic Doab, is believed to have founded the original city. This ancient city was known as Udanagri.
Later, General Cunningham and Captain H. Mackenzie linked the foundation of the walled city to Ali Khan, a Gujjar. Interestingly, his name resembles that of Alahana, the Raja of Gujara, defeated by Sangkara Varmma between 883 and 901 AD. Captain Mackenzie also suggested another theory. According to him, Rani Gujran, wife of Badr Sen and daughter-in-law of Raja Rasalu of Sialkot, rebuilt the city.
In the Mughal era, Emperor Akbar restored Gujrat both as a market and a military station. During British rule, Gujrat became the district headquarters. At that time, it also included the present day Mandi Bahauddin district.
Gujrat’s contributions to education have been remarkable. The Zamindar Educational Association opened a high school in 1921. Later, it founded Zamindar College in 1937. Students from Attock, Jhelum, Mianwali, Sargodha, and AJK came to study here. As a result, Gujrat earned the title Khita-e-Yunan of Punjab.
