Balochistan proudly hosts its first Women’s University in the provincial capital, Quetta.
For decades, people strongly felt the need for a women-focused educational institution in the region. Eventually, this vision materialized when Governor Mr. Owais Ahmed Ghani issued Ordinance No. 1 of 2004. Consequently, the Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University Quetta came into existence under this official ordinance.
The Balochistan Provincial Assembly passed the University Act on 26th August 2004, giving it legal standing. Pakistan Railways generously donated the Sardar Bahadur Khan Sanatorium for the university’s establishment. Spanning 40 acres, the site offered an ideal setting for academic and intellectual development. On 18th March 2004, authorities handed the building keys to the appointed Vice Chancellor.
This moment marked a turning point, transforming the sanatorium into a university for Balochistan’s women. It also became Pakistan’s third institution dedicated solely to women’s higher education. Since then, the university has offered a secure space for women to pursue academic excellence.
Remarkably, within just 59 days, the university launched its master’s programs in nine academic disciplines. At the time of launch, 103 students enrolled, reflecting immediate trust in the new institution. Today, students from across Balochistan are studying in 27 diverse academic fields. Following a semester system, the university ensures high-quality instruction in the English language. Currently, the institution is running its 15th academic session with a focus on growth and inclusion.
