In 1945, Dr. Mohammad Jamal Bhutta proposed establishing a medical teaching institution in Multan as Nishtar Medical University Multan . At that time, Punjab had only one medical college, King Edward Medical College in Lahore. Muslim students were significantly underrepresented there.
After Pakistan’s independence on August 14, 1947, Hindu doctors migrated to India. Consequently, the demand for qualified doctors in Pakistan surged. To address this shortage, the Punjab government decided to build a new medical college in Multan.
On December 31, 1950, a large public gathering took place at Lahnge Khan’s Garden near Civil Hospital Multan. During this event, Punjab’s Governor, Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar, announced the college’s establishment. The new institution was named Nishtar Medical College and Hospital in his honor. The people of Multan generously donated Rs. 1.815 million for its construction. Over time, this contribution grew to Rs. 3.3 million, reflecting immense public support.
Vision
I envision Nishtar Medical University as a modern, progressive hub for education, research, and clinical excellence. Here, tradition and innovation will coexist in an environment that values inquiry, tolerance, and compassion. We will focus on reducing human suffering and nurturing ethical, evidence-based medical practice. Above all, we aim to produce visionary scientific minds ready to lead in healthcare and research.
Mission
We aim to transform conventional lectures into student-focused, problem-based small group learning. Our strategy includes a gradual shift to a modular system of education. We will build a transparent and reliable evaluation system. Furthermore, we seek global partnerships with respected universities to enhance academic standards.
We plan to promote extracurricular and sports programs for student development. Additionally, we will implement best practice guidelines and rigorous monitoring to meet MDMS. Our goal is a paperless hospital supported by modern technology. We will also recruit specialists in research and medical education. Lastly, we aim to launch a dedicated university medical journal to share scientific contributions globally.
