In 1954, visionary industrialists proposed establishing a world-class textile institute in Pakistan. To bring this idea to life, the Punjab Government collaborated with leading textile industrialists. They established the Institute of Textile Technology in Faisalabad National Textile University (NTU) (formerly Lyallpur). The government generously provided 62 acres of land free of charge. Major textile firms Kohinoor Industries, Colony Textile Mills, Dawood Foundation, and Lyallpur Cotton Mills funded the project. They contributed Rs. 2.5 million for constructing buildings and essential infrastructure. Meanwhile, the UK Government supplied machinery and technical support under the Colombo Plan. Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan laid the foundation stone on October 12, 1959.
To manage operations, a Board of Trustees was formed. The Minister of Industries chaired the board, while donor company representatives served as members. To cover recurring expenses, the government imposed a cess on Pakistan’s textile industry. In 1965, the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, granted the Institute academic affiliation. Consequently, it was renamed the “National College of Textile Engineering.” The first batch of engineers graduated in 1966. By 1973, administrative control shifted to the Federal Government, reaffirming the same name.
