Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) began its journey in May 1922. Initially, it operated from Hall Road, Lahore. The college started with only 60 students, including 25 borders, and 13 dedicated staff members. By 1950, the student strength had reached 600. Consequently, the institution relocated to its current campus on Jail Road.

At its inception in 1922, Lahore College for Women University affiliated with the University of the Punjab. It offered undergraduate programs in 18 disciplines. Within two years, the college introduced graduate programs in 14 subjects. In 1940, LCWU began postgraduate classes in English. By 1949, it launched Honours programs in five subjects. It started with B.Sc. classes in 1955. Furthermore, postgraduate classes in Economics and Physics commenced in 1966.

Later, in 1979, new programs in Islamic Studies, Political Science, and Psychology expanded the academic offerings. A significant change came in 1990. That year, the institution gained administrative and financial autonomy. Another milestone followed on 13 August 1999. LCWU was officially recognized as a degree-awarding institution. Subsequently, on 10 September 2002, it was granted the status of a Women University.
