Karakoram International University(KIU)

Karakoram International University (KIU) was founded in 2002 in Gilgit through a charter from the Federal Government. This decision followed directives from then-President General Pervez Musharraf to improve education in the region. Later in July 2011, the Skardu campus was launched by Gilgit-Baltistan’s Chief Minister, Syed Mehdi Shah. Eventually, in 2017, the Skardu campus evolved into an independent institution University of Baltistan.

In 2014, President Mamnoon Hussain, during his visit as KIU’s Chancellor, announced two major initiatives. He approved the development of the KIU Hunza Campus and a separate Women Campus. As a result, the Hunza Campus began offering academic programs in 2016 to meet local demand. Subsequently, KIU expanded further by establishing campuses in Ghizer and Diamer districts in 2018. This move aligned with HEC’s Vision 2025, aiming to decentralize higher education.

The main KIU campus lies where the Gilgit and Hunza rivers converge, encircled by towering mountains. Previously, students had to travel down-country or abroad for higher studies—facing financial and social hardships. Now, KIU provides quality education locally, reducing barriers and empowering youth within Gilgit-Baltistan.
