Initially, the University of Lakki Marwat functioned as a sub campus of UST Bannu. In December 2014, it began with Political Science and Education departments at GPGC (Boys) Lakki Marwat. By 2017, the campus evolved into a fully-fledged university. Governor KPK issued its formal charter through an ordinance on August 22, 2016.

Subsequently, the KP Provincial Assembly passed the Act on February 26, 2018. Presently, the university operates from the GPGC (Boys) Lakki Marwat campus. Moreover, 1600 Kanal of land near Dalo Khel Pattak on Lakki-Tajazai Road has been secured. The Higher Education Commission allocated Rs. 1.52 billion for infrastructure and development projects.
