Nishtar Medical College Multan

Nishtar Medical College, Multan named after Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar, is one of the leading educational institutions in Southern Punjab. Established in 1951, it is Pakistan’s third oldest medical college. The college is affiliated with Nishtar Hospital, one of the country’s largest medical facilities, housing 1800 beds.

Located just 3 km from the center of Multan, the college sits on 20 acres of land. The entire campus, which includes the hospital and hostels, spans over 112 acres.

Nishtar Medical College was initially funded by both government and local philanthropic sources. Since its founding, the institution has produced generations of skilled doctors and dentists. The region’s extreme heat influenced the campus design, with high ceilings and large windows to help reduce the temperature.

The campus is expansive, featuring a central garden for student activities. In addition to the hospital and hostels, the campus includes faculty residences. The buildings were constructed in traditional Islamic architectural style from the 1960s to the early 1980s.

Brief Overview

Historically, the student body was mostly male, and many were involved in political activities. Over time, however, the gender ratio has shifted, and the student population now includes a significant number of women. Dr. Afzal Rahman, the Assistant Professor of Physiology at the time, delivered the first lecture at the college.

Dr. Jamal Bhutta was the founding principal, followed by distinguished figures like Prof. Hayat Zafar. Prof. Zafar played a pivotal role in improving the hospital and later became a leader in the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. Faculty members like Prof. Rauf Khan, Prof. Zafar Haider, and Prof. Gulzar Ahmed served for many years, contributing significantly to the college’s development.

Nishtar Medical College offers practical experience through its large, active hospital, particularly in the medical and surgical fields. The college attracts students from various countries, including Palestine, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Mauritius, Somalia, Nigeria, Libya, Sudan, the UAE, Iraq, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, the Maldives, the US, Canada, the UK, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

The college holds a prestigious ranking both in Pakistan and across the Middle East. It has produced a diverse range of medical professionals, many of whom practice internationally.
