UET Taxila is located in a historically significant region, globally recognized for its rich archaeological heritage. The area, originally known as Takshasila, meaning City of Cut Stones, has witnessed numerous civilizations. It was once a part of the mighty Achaemenid Empire before being conquered by Alexander the Great in 327 BC.
Later, the Mauryan Empire took control, with Emperor Ashoka playing a key role in advancing the city’s development. Eventually, the Indo-Greek rulers, descendants of Alexander’s warriors, ushered in a prosperous era in Gandhara.
By 50 AD, the Kushan dynasty had established its reign, transforming Taxila into a prominent center of learning, art, philosophy, and religion for the next two centuries. During this period, Jaulian flourished as a major academic and pilgrimage site, drawing scholars from regions as far as China and Greece.
In modern times, Taxila’s significance evolved with industrial growth. Around 1950, the establishment of Ordnance Factories in Wah, near Taxila, laid the foundation for its industrialization. By the mid 1960s, the city became home to the country’s largest Mechanical Complex and Foundry, fueling further development. The 1970s marked another milestone with the creation of Heavy Industries Taxila near the famous Taxila Museum. Additionally, Pakistan’s largest Aeronautical Complex was set up in Kamra, about 45 km away.
Given Taxila’s strategic location, the Punjab government selected it as the site for a constituent college of UET Lahore in the 1970s. The surrounding industrial landscape expanded rapidly, with the rise of neighboring industries and the development of a new industrial zone in Hattar, about 20 km from Taxila. This transformation has positioned Taxila as both an industrial hub and a gateway to the historic Silk Route.
Establishment of UET Taxila
During the 1970s, as the demand for engineering education grew, authorities decided to expand UET Lahore by creating additional campuses. As part of this initiative, the University College of Engineering Taxila was founded in 1975. Initially operating from Sahiwal, the institution relocated to its permanent campus in Taxila in 1978.
For nearly 15 years, UET Lahore administered the college until October 1993, when it gained independent university status through the University of Engineering and Technology Taxila Ordinance. Since then, UET Taxila has grown into a leading institution, currently educating over 2,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Campus Location
The university is situated on the outskirts of Taxila, approximately 5 km from the city center, near the Mohra Shah Wali Shah railway station on the Taxila Havelian branch line. It is conveniently located 35 km from Islamabad and Rawalpindi, along the main Rawalpindi-Peshawar highway.
Spanning 163 acres, the campus is equipped with all essential facilities, including academic departments, student hostels, faculty and staff residences, a guesthouse, a post office, and a bank. University buses run daily routes, connecting the campus with Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Wah Cantt, ensuring accessibility for students and faculty.

UET Taxila Library
The Central Library at UET Taxila plays a crucial role in fostering academic excellence by supporting research, teaching, and learning activities. With a seating capacity of approximately 400 individuals spread across various study halls. The library offers a comfortable and conducive environment for students and faculty. Operating in two shifts from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM on all working days. It provides ample time for research and study while incorporating scheduled breaks.
The library boasts an extensive collection of encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, standard specifications, yearbooks, almanacs, abstracts, and indexes. Additionally, it features a well-curated selection of reference materials, including textbooks and technical books, catering to diverse academic and research needs.
Library Resources and Services
With a collection of 63,501 books and numerous issues of scientific and technical journals, the library covers a wide range of disciplines. While engineering remains the primary focus, the collection also includes books on humanities, social sciences, and Islamic studies. Students and faculty members can borrow books and other materials, except for reference books, reserved books, and serial publications, which are for in-library use only.
