Emerson University, Multan, was established under Act VIII of 2021 by the Punjab Assembly. It is now one of the largest public institutions in Southern Punjab. The University is centrally located in Multan city. Its history spans over a century, with a significant list of distinguished alumni contributing to various fields. Additionally, the institution was founded on April 13, 1920, as Govt. College Multan. In 1933, it was renamed Govt. Emerson College, Multan, in honor of Sir Herbert William Emerson, the then Governor of Punjab. In 2021, the Provincial Assembly of Punjab restructured the institution into Emerson University, Multan, granting it autonomy and degree-granting status.

Currently, Emerson University serves over 7,000 students, with plans to enroll nearly 20,000 in the near future. The University aims to introduce market-oriented programs across several disciplines, including arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, management, and computer science. Moreover, these programs will range from ADP/BS to PhD. At present, the University offers four-year BS programs in 52 disciplines, two-year M.Phil. programs in seven fields.
