Dawood University of Engineering and Technology (DCET), Karachi, was the first private engineering college in Pakistan. They laid its foundation in 1962 and admitted the first batch of students in 1964.

Mr. Ahmed Dawood, an industrialist and philanthropist, founded Dawood College to teach engineering. He believed engineering education was necessary for Pakistan’s industrial growth. The college was the first to offer Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, and Electronics Engineering.

Brief History

In 1972, the government took control of Dawood College under the Federal Ministry of Education. After that, the college started two new programs: Industrial Engineering and Management, and Architecture and Planning. It introduced Architecture and Planning by merging the Karachi School of Architecture, founded in 1953. 

A new hostel was built in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, but later it became the Department of Architecture and Planning. People started calling it the Iqbal Campus. Even today, Iqbal Campus works well and stays closely connected to the main campus despite the distance.

New Engineering Departments

Since 2010, the institution has expanded to support the country’s industrial sector. It introduced four new engineering departments 

  • Petroleum and Gas Engineering
  • Telecommunications Engineering
  • Computer Systems Engineering
  • Energy and Environmental Engineering

In 2011, after the 18th Constitutional Amendment, Dawood College was transferred to the Government of Sindh. In 2013, the institution took a big step toward growth and success. The Government of Sindh passed a law to upgrade the college to a university, now called Dawood University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Karachi. With this change, Dr. Faizullah Abbasi became the first Vice Chancellor, marking the start of its transformation. 

In 2016, a project to strengthen Dawood University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Karachi, was approved for Rs. 578 million. This project focused on upgrading laboratories, developing IT infrastructure, and providing PhD scholarships for faculty.

Since 2013, the university has worked to improve academics and research by hiring PhD and Master’s faculty in all departments. By 2022, it had around 70 PhD faculty members, and 30 more were studying for PhDs abroad.

In 2018, Dawood University introduced PhD programs for the first time. By 2021, it had produced 126 master’s graduates. In 2020, the university also launched new bachelor’s programs in Mathematics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Business Information Systems to meet market demands.

Dawood University of Engineering & Technology is a growing and promising institution. It is located in the heart of Karachi, near Quaid’s Mausoleum, in Pakistan’s industrial hub.

Affiliation

The Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners (PCATP) and the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) have accredited these programs.

Library

The Central Library at Dawood University of Engineering & Technology (DUET), Karachi, supports both undergraduate and postgraduate students along with the teaching faculty. It has grown from a print-based collection to a vast digital library. Now, students can access e-books and databases like Calibre E-books and Koha through QR codes.

Computer Labs

The computer lab at Dawood University Karachi has modern facilities to help students with programming and software tasks. It provides a good environment for coding, software development, and data analysis using tools like Python, MATLAB, and database systems.

The lab also supports research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity. Experienced faculty and lab assistants guide students with hands-on training to improve their technical and problem-solving skills.
