The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South COMSATS operates as a global organization. It seeks to bridge the widening divide between developed and developing nations by promoting the effective use of science and technology. The initiative to establish COMSATS came from the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Abdus Salam.

COMSATS held its inaugural conference in Islamabad on October 4-5, 1994. Delegates from thirty six nations participated, including twenty two Ministers, diplomats based in Islamabad, and representatives from global organizations such as UNESCO, UNIDO, UNEP, and the World Bank.

During the conference, Islamabad was chosen as the permanent location for COMSATS Headquarters and Secretariat. It was also resolved that Pakistan’s Head of State would serve as the founding Chairperson. The Government of Pakistan committed to funding the operational and administrative functions of the Secretariat. Meanwhile, the Commission’s development initiatives would receive financial support through a dedicated Technical Assistance Fund. Moreover, This fund would draw from member country contributions, service fees, international grants, and contracted project revenues.

COMSATS University Islamabad operates under the authority of its Senate, chaired by the Chancellor. The President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan holds this position. Along with its main campus in Islamabad, CUI has branches in Lahore, Abbottabad, Wah, Attock, Sahiwal, Vehari, and an online Virtual Campus.

Vision

CUI aspires to become a truly national institution with a footprint in every province. It aims to rank among the top five universities in Pakistan, the top 100 in developing nations. Ultimately among the top 100 universities worldwide in the next 10 to 15 years, respectively.
