The University of Sindh, Pakistan oldest higher education institution, was established under the 1947 Sindh Act. Later, the Act was revised in 1961 and further amended to enhance autonomy and academic participation. In 1972, a new law granted the University greater self-governance and increased faculty involvement in decision-making.
Initially, from 1947 to 1951, the University operated only as an examination board. However, after moving to Hyderabad in 1951, it evolved into a full-fledged teaching institution. To address the shortage of qualified educators, it launched the Department of Education, later upgraded to Faculty status.
By the mid-1950s, the University added departments in science and the humanities to expand academic offerings. In the late 1950s, development began on a new campus at Jamshoro, 15 kilometers from Hyderabad. This campus, now known as Allama I.I. Kazi Campus saw major growth in the following years. Science departments relocated there in 1961, followed by Arts and Humanities departments in 1970.
