Government College University Hyderabad (GCUH) was established on October 1, 1917, under the name Sindh National Arts College. Initially, it focused on intermediate arts courses, later expanding to offer programs in science, agriculture, and political science. Following the upheavals in the Indian subcontinent, the college closed, and its faculty relocated. However, it was reopened in 1948 as D.G. National Government College, with Prof. Dr. Adrian Duarte leading its revival.
In the 1990s, GCUH began offering postgraduate programs in arts and science, solidifying its role as a major educational institution in Sindh. The college introduced programs such as M.A. in Urdu and English, M.Sc. in various sciences, and, in 2002, a Bachelor of Computer Science. As the demand for its elevation to university status grew, it gained further momentum following a visit by Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in 2013.
On October 9, 2017, Sindh’s Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, announced the college’s promotion to university status, formalized by the Sindh Government Gazette on May 21, 2018. In March 2021, Prof. Dr. Tayyaba Zarif became the first permanent Vice Chancellor of GCUH, steering the university toward significant advancements in higher education.
