Multan has long been a prominent hub of academic excellence. In the 12th century, Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya (1172–1262 A.D.), a revered Muslim scholar and saint, founded an advanced theological institute in the city. This institution attracted researchers and students from across the globe. Due to its rich cultural heritage and strategic location, Multan naturally evolved into an educational nucleus.
To further this tradition, the Punjab Legislative Assembly established the University of Multan in 1975. In recognition of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya’s contributions, the university was renamed Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) in 1979.
The main campus lies 10 kilometers from Multan’s city center and spans 960 acres. BZU operates a transport fleet of 45 buses and 3 coaches, serving both students and staff. Initially, the university operated in rented buildings with only eight departments. Today, it boasts over 51 academic units, including departments, institutes, and affiliated colleges.
BZU’s faculty includes 630 members, of which 389 hold Ph.D. degrees. The university currently educates approximately 26,659 students, with female students making up half of the total population.
