The Karachi Institute of Power Engineering (KINPOE) was established to produce skilled professionals in Nuclear Power Technology. Situated near the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP), the institute specializes in training engineers and operators for nuclear power plant operations and maintenance.
Academic Programs at KINPOE
- KINPOE offers the following specialized programs in nuclear power engineering:
- Master of Science in Nuclear Power Engineering (MS-NPE)
- Postgraduate Training Program (PGTP)
- Post-Diploma Training Program (PDTP)
History & Evolution
Initially known as the Karachi Nuclear Power Training Centre (KNPTC), KINPOE primarily provided a one-year training program for engineers and technicians focused on KANUPP operations and maintenance. Over time, the curriculum expanded to emphasize analytical and design skills.
In 1993, KINPOE introduced the MS in Nuclear Power Engineering, leveraging its extensive expertise in the field.
Affiliations
The Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) awards the MS in Nuclear Power Engineering to KINPOE graduates. Previously, NED University of Engineering & Technology also conferred Master of Engineering (M.Eng) degrees in Nuclear Power Engineering through its affiliation with KINPOE.
Program Details
Master of Science in Nuclear Power Engineering (MS-NPE)
To design, construct, and operate a nuclear power plant, engineers require a strong foundation in science and engineering. KINPOE’s MS-NPE program provides multidisciplinary education in nuclear power technology, welcoming candidates from diverse engineering and scientific backgrounds.
Duration: 2 years
Structure:
Zero semester (7 weeks) for foundational knowledge
Five regular semesters (14 weeks each)
- Fellowship: Financial support for students
- Final Award: MS-NPE degree from PIEAS
Postgraduate Training Program (PGTP)
This one-year program is designed for engineers specializing in nuclear power operations and maintenance.
Structure
Zero semester (6 weeks) (Introductory coursework)
Two semesters of classroom training, lab work, and continuous assessments
On-the-job training and plant visits after coursework completion
Participants develop a broad understanding of nuclear science and technology essential for managing nuclear facilities.
Post-Diploma Training Program (PDTP)
Designed for diploma holders and science graduates, this one-year program focuses on nuclear power plant technology.
Structure:
Classroom instruction
Laboratory experiments
Field visits
Diploma holders are appointed as Tech-1
Science graduates are appointed as Scientific Assistant-1
Benefits:
Monthly stipend: Rs. 12,500
Free hostel accommodation for outstation trainees
Admission is based on merit, including academic qualifications, an aptitude test, and an interview.
